Food Diversity

A very interesting article from National Geographic that highlights the importance of the worlds antique and heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Just how good are they for you!

There is always so much to learn about apples! I am constantly amazed at the rich and varied history that is contained in our orchard! I Was wondering about the health benefits today and found this wonderful article.  This is from the conclusion of the paper:

“In numerous epidemiological studies, apples have been associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and asthma. In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that apples have high antioxidant activity, can inhibit cancer cell proliferation, decrease lipid oxidation, and lower cholesterol, potentially explaining their role in reducing risk of chronic disease.”

The whole paper is fascinating and worth reading. I can’t help but think about the variation in health benefits of the different varieties of apples that the authors tested. It makes me wonder what could be found if all 1500 varieties in our orchard were tested!

Please take a look at the paper and let us know what you think.

47 varieties .
We will be there watching the balloons in the morning.
Tim and Cindy don’t usually agree on a favorite for the week.
But this week they both love the Holstein. It is an apple dating back to
1918 from Hamburg, Germany and it has a pineapple flavor.
Also many people have been requesting the pink fleshed apples.
We will have 2 different varieties there, Mott Pink and Pink Pearmain.
Both pink in the middle.

Apple Orchard Tours Cancelled

Concerning the apple tours we previously posted on the Eastman’s Antique Blog and web site:
Due to over-cropping of the apples we have experienced unusual breakage of
branches, and droppings of thousands of apples. This has made our orchard unsafe to
have people walking through. It is even hard for us, as we are picking, because it is like walking on marbles. As the season progresses, we expect this situation to get worse.
So because of these unforeseen circumstances the tours for this year have been cancelled.
We will still be at the Midland Farm markets on Saturday and Wednesday mornings, with
many varieties of the apples. Sorry to those who have already shown interest in our tours.
